What is a sensitivity reader?

Sensitivity reading is the process of analyzing written work for cultural humility, often with a particular identity and societal issues in mind.

DEI-analysis and sensitivity readings are closely connected and sometimes used interchangeably.

The role of a sensitivity reader is to provide an extra set of eyes to ensure your content is as respectful and conscious as possible, ideally from a community and with expertise in the area you need reviewed. DEI analyses are generally more of an overview, led by people of varied backgrounds that are well-suited and experienced in the DEI space.

This is where I come in.

My lived experience as someone navigating intersectional identities informs my professional work, making me well-primed to handle your written work with care, and to push you closer to equity and inclusion.

My reads always include notes and feedback on general cultural awareness, bias, and inclusive language. More specific topics connected to my experience can be included, such as topics under the umbrellas of: Black communities and representation, mental health, LGBTQ+ inclusion, women/AFAB experience, and chronic pain.

My Process

The general scope of my work includes:

  • A preliminary discussion with the author or team lead to ensure we’re a good fit.

What is the project? What are your ultimate goals and concerns?

  • Once we decide to move forward, I’ll give the work a thorough examination. Timeframes depend heavily on the length and type of project.

  • Following the reading, I’ll provide detailed feedback on my findings. This includes general flags, language edits, and suggestions.
